Without your fundraising, we wouldn’t be able to continue to make a difference for the staff and service users of Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. Whether you want to create your own or join one of our upcoming events, you can find all the information below.

brighterway Wellbeing Walking Team Challenge 2022!

Walk 2022 kilometres (1256 miles) approximately 1 lap around the county boundary of Hampshire.

At brighterway the health and wellbeing of our staff and patients is our priority. We know the start of a new year can be daunting and is often a time for people to set themselves new challenges and resolutions for the year ahead. We thought we’d start the year with a challenge of our own to help motivate us all to look after our health and wellbeing. The challenge can be done with teams of up to 8 members, you don’t need to walk together, just make sure you all monitor your steps and collate them each week to help you keep track of how you’re doing. As a team you need to walk 2022 kilometres, (1256 miles) approximately 1 lap around the county boundary of Hampshire (excluding Isle of Wight) – between 17th January (Blue Monday)- 28th February.

The challenge starts on 17th January, also known as ‘Blue Monday’, which is rumoured to be the day when people feel the most down every year. Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active and become healthier.

To help you get an idea of how many steps you need, an average person has a stride length of approximately 2.1 to 2.5 feet. That means that it takes over 2,000 steps to walk one mile and 10,000 steps would be almost 5 miles.

To complete the challenge each team member will need to walk 7850 steps a day

There are some prizes up for grabs for the first team to complete the 2022 kilometres and for the team that walks the furthest overall during the challenge!

If you don’t have access to a smart watch you can Download Active 10 from the NHS website onto your smart phone which allows you to track how far you have walked. Alternatively, set yourself a route you know the distance of and contribute by walking it, every step counts!

You are welcome to donate via our JustGiving page brighterway – JustGiving however this isn’t compulsory. We just want to help get this year off to the best start possible! Any donations will go towards supporting other projects to help improve the health and wellbeing of our staff and patients.

Before you start, make sure you’re ready to walk safely.

Any shoes or trainers that are comfortable, provide adequate support and do not cause blisters will do. If you’re walking to work, you could wear your usual work clothes with a comfy pair of shoes and change shoes when you get into work. For long walks, you may want to take some water and healthy snacks with you to help keep your energy up. You may also want to check the weather and have a waterproof jacket to hand in case you need it! Be aware that due to the time of year it gets dark earlier, so please be safe if you plan on walking in the dark. Ensure you have adequate light and don’t walk on your own.

Before you know it, your team will have walked 2022 kilometres and completed the challenge! Hopefully you’ll be feeling happy and healthy and maybe even fancy participating in some of our upcoming fundraising opportunities!

To get involved please email with the names of your team and team members. We look forward to hearing from you!

NHS Big Tea- 5th July 2022

The NHS Big Tea is an annual fundraising and awareness campaign with the aim of celebrating the NHS’ birthday on 5 July and recognising the vital work of NHS charities in supporting our health service. In hospitals, in homes and in local communities across the country, everyone who loves the NHS is encouraged to come together with friends, family and colleagues to host a tea party and ‘raise a cuppa’ to the NHS

At the NHS Big Tea, we fundraise for the wellbeing and welfare of every nurse and night porter, every counsellor and carer, every surgeon and support worker – every one of the NHS champions who do so much to protect us.
